Charing Cross Exhibition Private View (21 Aug 2014)
On the 21st August 2014 the British Chinese Workforce Heritage project welcomes guests to the private view of the new exhibition, ‘Chinese Medicine and Health practices in the UK’. The night was led by Sherri Wong, the exhibition co-ordinator and Paulina Kanarek, a project officer, as they delivered a bilingual introduction to the exhibition for guests. The evening also unveiled the launch of the workforce video for traditional Chinese medicine.
Guests and interviewees of the project enjoyed the presentation and the exhibition with around 60 in attendance. The timeline which detailed the history of Chinese medicine in the UK was especially popular amongst guests.
The exhibition presents historical and contemporary images of: acupuncture, herbal medicines, cupping, moxibustion, tui na massage, gong fu, and tai ji quan. Practices which have been used by our interviewees throughout their working lives in the UK.
The impact of these traditional Chinese medicine practices in the UK in the areas of education, clinical research and community services will be explored through linking archive materials and historical documents with contemporary photographs of practices in use today.
