Man Ying Cheng was born in Hong Kong and on a friend's recommendation, joined the Royal Navy in 1947. He retired in 1971, altogether serving for twenty-four years, rising from the rank of Steward to Petty Officer STD. He served many warships. His main responsibility was catering. Man Ying Cheng whilst in service participated in many battles, with outstanding military service. He participated in rescuing the HMS Amethyst and served in the Korean War, and also visited Brunei. Although life at sea was difficult, he was able to experience many different countries and local customs, and ultimately his time in the Royal Navy was a most happy one.
