Alain Lau's military career started in 1987 with the Hong Kong Military Service Corps (HKMSC) attached to the Royal Army Veterinary Corps (RAVC) as a dog handler. He later transferred to the Royal Hong Kong Regiment (RHKR) as a member of the Assault Troop where he served until the 1995 disbandment of the RHKR.

Since leaving the Services, he has worked with the Royal Hong Kong Auxiliary Police (RHKAP) now positioned in a border district. Alain is currently self-employed running a small company, as well as serving as a Director of two non-government organizations (NGOs) – an environmental protection organization, and a charity providing martial arts for the disabled. He is also a Committee member of the British-Chinese Soldiers' Benevolent Association and "RHKRSSA" shooting club.
