Man Kai Chan was born in Hong Kong. He was enlisted in 1983 and had served for nine years.
Chan was assigned in Dragon Company after the recruit training. As a regimental police, he was responsible for the security of the barrack. He had been also assigned to China-Hong Kong border to handle the illegal immigrants issues, including interrogation and translation works. Apart from the above-mentioned assignment, Chan worked in Royal Military Police for a year, which was to maintain the rules and orders in the army. He received six-week small arms and light weapons training in the UK before he joined the Army Training Depot as an instructor. He worked there until his retirement and trained four cohorts of recruits in total.
Due to the transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong to China, Chan retired from the army as a Corporal in May 1992. He received the financial support from the army before his retirement to attend retraining program and complete advanced diploma of business administration in Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
