Koon Yau Lam was born in 1950 in Hong Kong. He was enlisted in 1973 and had served for twenty two years.

After completing his training as a recruit, Lam first worked as a Regimental Policeman who was responsible for the security in the military camp. He was then transferred to The 29th Squadron, Royal Corps of Transport where he assisted in transportation of senior officers and supplies. At one point he left the Royal Corps of Transport temporarily and worked as a storeman in the Royal Army Ordnance Corp. His responsibility was to guarantee that all weapons were in usable condition. He was later redeployed back to the Royal Corps of Transport.

During his time as a military serviceman he had engaged in the 1975 Vietnam Refugee Crisis that happened in Hong Kong. He was also once sent to Brunei for military training.

Lam retired from the army as a Private in 1995.
