Mrs Juanita Yau has come to UK from Hong Kong through a somewhat usual route. Upon completion of her diploma course in Hong Kong Polytechnic, she unexpectedly got an offer to work as a commonwealth trainee in a subsidiary of Dunlop in Southampton which also sponsored her to do a part-time degree in Chemistry.

She joined her husband and moved to London, Cambridge and finally settled in Manchester due to education and jobs. She always strives to improve herself. When she moved to Manchester, she took the opportunity to study a full time Master Course in Analytical Science in UMIST that helped the progress of her professional career. She had worked for various multi-national companies including Huntingdon Research Centre, Schering Agrochemicals, and Air Products (Chemicals) Plc for which she eventually became the Principal Occupational Hygienist responsible for the prevention of ill-health for the workforce in Europe.

Juanita is a Committee Member of the North West British Occupational Hygiene Society and Regional Environmental Protection Advisory Committees.

Juanita's voluntary work has made significant contributions to the Chinese community services in Greater Manchester notably through her work with the Wai Yin Chinese Women's Society. She has devoted much of her time to the Society over the last 20 years and as the Chairperson for over 10 years. The Society has developed into one of the largest Chinese community groups in the UK employing approximately 50 staff and with over 60 volunteers. The Society is still being benefited enormously by her dedication, perseverance and support to the staff.

Juanita is also the producer/presenter for the Chinese community radio program "Chinatown" (formerly known as the "Eastern Horizon") for BBC Radio Manchester. The programme acts as a bridge between the Chinese community and wider society. Juanita has been actively recruiting young people to join the programme, providing them with training and guidance in producing good quality community radio features.

Juanita is also a successful mother and wife. Her son, Canon, is a gentle young man embarking his career in medicine. Her daughter, Angela, just completed her GCSE with 9A* and 1A. Her husband, KK, is an expert in power plants design, and is also actively involved in voluntary services.
