Dorothy To came to the UK from Hong Kong in the 1980's to study English, although she only finally settled in the UK in 1984. From 1986 she has been living in Hertfordshire. Dorothy worked for many years when she first arrived as a full-time housewife supporting her young children and her husband's takeaway business. As her children grew up and she had more free time she went to improve her English language skills at college. This training enabled Dorothy to get a job working for Hertfordshire County Council.
Dorothy began working at Haringey Chinese Centre's Chinese Language School in 1995 on a voluntary basis teaching the Cantonese language to students, having previous experience in teaching positions. She has been working at the Chinese Language School ever since and has taken up more responsibilities. The school meets for two hours on a Saturday; however her work extends out of the classroom in supporting students, preparing lessons and marking homework. As Dorothy has taught at the school for 19 years she has seen much of its history. Dorothy was also briefly on the Management Committee for Haringey Chinese Centre, then called the Haringey Chinese Community Centre. The work at the language school brings Dorothy into Haringey on a regular basis allowing her to interact with the Chinese community in the borough.
