Alex Lau was born in Hong Kong and came to the UK in the 1960s with his mother. In London he worked as a bus driver and manual labourer before becoming involved with Harlow Community Centre as a volunteer when he retired. Since 2012 Alex has been acting as the general manager of the centre.
Harlow and District Chinese Community Centre was established in 2000 as a permanent community centre serving the Harlow and Waltham Forest areas but it's 500 members come from all over the surrounding area as there are few community centres on the edge of London. The centre provides support and advice as well as a luncheon club, dancing lessons, Mandarin Saturday school and other activities such as tai qi and trips to museums and cultural attractions in London.
